Why did I decide to study Japanese?
The main reason is that I decided to study Japanese is because I think the language is really interesting! I love studying different languages, and previously I had studied German, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese, when I decided to try Japanese. I got some textbooks and studied it on my own for about one year before coming to Columbia. I really like the way I can use the characters I knew in Chinese as Kanji in Japanese (I studied Mandarin in school for 4 years), although we haven't got there in class yet I can write some of them. Also I'm already used to a teacher correcting my stroke order, hehe. So far I am enjoying the language class! I am trying to learn the kanji alongside the romaji in class with the use of an online dictionary for stroke order, so it can be fast paced, but ultimately its fun!
I also like to learn about the culture of Japan. When I was in elementary school I had a teacher that came from Japan, and she shared a lot of culture with us. We learned to do calligraphy, use chopsticks, and sing songs, and she even let us try on clothes like yukata and geta. So even since then I thought it was interesting! I hope to one day be able to study abroad for a summer in Japan. Aside from that, I also like to listen to Japanese music frequently and play Japanese games, so I think if I study a lot I could understand these things better. I'm having fun learning new things about Japanese language and culture, so please continue reading my blog!

That is very cool that you are learning kanji on top of hiragana and katakana!
返信削除Wow, you already studied so many difficult languages, and it's cool that you already have the experience of Chinese characters to apply to what we're learning in class, since I'm sure it will be a while before we start learning all the kanji and how it is used (although if i were you I probably would have tried to test out of the language requirement ;P but even then learning Japanese is still worth the extra effort :D)
返信削除When I first entered your blog, I thought it were Okamoto Sensei's. So many great details!
返信削除BTW I really like the way you use "hehe" in the sentence LOL.

Back when I had a lot of free time and many bootleg copies of Rosetta Stone, I also really enjoyed studying languages as well. At one point, I was attempting (operative word) to simultaneously learn Russian, Chinese, Italian, French, and Spanish (I mentioned a lot of free time, right?). It was a fool's errand. Italian, French and Spanish just ran together. I took two years of Chinese at Columbia and I am still fighting down the urge to say things in Chinese whenever I don't know the right Japanese words. Just me?
返信削除Wow, so many people learnt Chinese. Wouldn't it be confusing when it comes to the similar-not so similar kanji...
返信削除It's sooo impressive that you've learnt sooo many different languages! I always find studying languages super challenging haha. Hope you can give me some advice ;)
返信削除I think Japanese is difficult language but I hope you master Japanese.
